Affirmative action, but pretend it’s meritocracy when it’s for rich white people.

I read Elizabeth Wurtzel’s book, Prozac Nation, about her attending Harvard. She goes into some detail about it.

Look, she wasn’t dirt poor, by any means. Her mother worked at a book publishing company. But they weren’t rich, either. Dad was no help whatsoever. She got a scholarship.

Her mother visited her there and scolded her for ““wearing cheap jeans” around all these rich kids.

Her answer: “They were cheap jeans too. They’re still rich, mom. They just feel they need to pose as poor to make themselves feel better about being here.”

Granted this was 1987, so things might have changed. But it was an interesting remark.
